Top eight Nigerian celebrities you never knew were lawyers

There is a long list of Nigerian celebrities who are law graduates. But while many of them branched out to study law and then get on with their other passion, just a few of them followed it up until the stage of the mandatory Call to Bar, which confers on them the physical right to practice law. The spotlight is on these notable celebrities, who should be rightly called ‘Men of the Bar’.

  • Kelechi Amadi-Obi

Celebrity photographer, Kelechi Amadi-Obi is a qualified Lawyer from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

He obtained his law degree in 1992 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1994. While on campus, he floated a small company which he named De-Zulu. Later, he grew more interested in the art of photography and eventually, after long years of practice, became a founding member of the Nigerian photography collective Depth of Field.

He is the publisher of Mania Magazine.

 

  • Omotunde Adebowale David

 Omotunde Adebowale David, popularly known as Lolo1, is a Nollywood actress, and a Nigerian radio presenter. She hosted the radio programme, Oga Madam on Wazobia FM 94.1, till 2019 when she left and joined Lasgidi FM as the general manager and an on-air personality.

She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law from Lagos State University and later went to law school.

She started her career as a legal practitioner after being called to bar in 2000. She worked in a law firm before dropping it for media job in 2004.

 

  • Femi Adebayo

 Femi Adebayo is a Nigerian lawyer, film actor, director, producer and Special Adviser to the Governor of Kwara State on Arts, Culture and Tourism. He is the son of the veteran actor, Adebayo Salami.

Adebayo attended the University of Ilorin, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law. He later earned a master’s degree in Law at the University of Ibadan. He was called to the Nigerian bar in 2003.

He practised Law for two years, but even then, he still had interest in the entertainment industry. According to him, seeing his father regularly on television kept motivating him to pursue his passion.

 

  • Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD)

 Richard Mofe-Damijo popularly known as RMD is a Nigerian actor, writer, producer, and lawyer.

After obtaining his first degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Benin in 1997, RMD went further to University of Lagos to study Law and later graduated in 2004 with a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy.

He later went to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja and was called to bar as a legal practitioner in 2005. But he refused to practise law and rather decided to pursue acting as a professional career.

 

  • Ebuka Obi-Uchendu

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu is a Nigerian lawyer and media personality from Okija in Anambra State. He is known for hosting the reality show Big Brother Naija, the long running Rubbin’ Minds talk show on Channels TV as well as co-hosting The Spot and Men’s Corner on Ebonylife Television.

Ebuka obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Abuja in 2004. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja and was called to bar in 2005.

He returned to school and graduated in December 2010 from the Washington College of Law of the American University Washington DC, with Master of Laws degree specializations in Intellectual Property as well as Communications Law from the Law and Government program.

 Kenneth Okonkwo is one of the most celebrated Nigerian actors, directors, producers and television personalities.

Okonkwo attended the University of Nigeria, Nsuka where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and emerged as the best graduating student. He later had a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, and was called to bar in 2009.

As a lawyer, he owns a Chamber known as Supreme God Chambers. Though a lawyer, he believes that there are cases that can be settled out of court without unnecessary litigation.

 

  • Folarin Falana (Falz)

 Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz is a Nigerian rapper, actor and songwriter. Falz entered the entertainment industry with a special style that got everyone glued. He calls his style of music ‘Wahzup Music’, a mix of hip-hop with old school sound and funny lyrics. Another name given to him by his friends is Falz the BAHDguy (Brilliant And Highly Distinct Guy).

Falz was born on October 27th 1990 in Mushin, Lagos. His parents, Femi and Funmi Falana are respected lawyers and human right activists.

Falz obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law from University of Reading, England. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja and was called to bar in 2012.

 Kanayo O. Kanayo is a famous Nollywood actor, producer, television personality and a philanthropist.

Kanayo obtained a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Lagos State University. He went further to study Law at the University of Abuja and graduated in 2019.

He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja and was called to bar in 2020.
